The abandoned ruins under restoration of the Wilderstein’s Carriage House are on 249 Morton Road, the town of Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, New York. Located snugly along the Hudson River lies the Wilderstein Mansion and estate. The home and the out buildings have rested here since 1852, when Thomas Holy Suckley purchased the property. Before the purchase, the land was used as a sheep meadow for the neighboring estate Wildercliff. Thomas Suckley named the property ‘Wilderstein’ in reference to an Indian petroglyph that was nearby which translated to ‘wild man’s stone’. The Wilderstein Mansion and grounds were enlarged in 1888.
